How We Transition from Summer to Fall on the Farm
As the golden light shifts and the mornings start to carry a crisp chill, the flower fields tell us that change is near. September is a beautiful in-between month here on the farm — summer isn’t quite ready to let go, and fall is gently moving in.
Here’s a peek at how we transition from summer’s bold blooms to fall’s cozy charm:
Saying Goodbye to Summer Favorites
Our late-season sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos, and dahlias keep the fields bright well into September. These blooms thrive as long as the nights stay mild, and we treasure each one. As their season closes, we carefully gather seeds from zinnias, cosmos, rudbeckia, and marigolds—saving a bit of summer to replant in the spring. The rest is dried for arrangements or returned to the compost, enriching the soil for next year.
Prepping the Fields for Cooler Weather
September is as much about looking forward as it is about celebrating the now. Once beds are cleared, we sow clover and wildflower cover crops to rest, protect, and replenish the soil over winter. This not only prevents erosion but also gives pollinators a late-season feast.
We also plant cold-hardy flowers—like larkspur, bachelor’s buttons, snapdragons, and calendula—so they can establish roots before winter and bloom early next spring. It’s a rhythm of renewal: saying goodbye, saving seeds, and sowing hope for next season.
Fall Blooms Begin to Shine
While summer lingers, fall ushers in its own palette of blooms:
Snapdragons in jewel tones and pastels
Lisianthus with soft, ruffled petals
Rudbeckia & Coneflowers with golden, earthy warmth
Heirloom Chrysanthemums—textured, fragrant, and deeply traditional for autumn
Veronica, Eucalyptus & Asters adding texture and movement
Late Dahlias—the queens of autumn, bursting in rich shades of burgundy, peach, and gold
These flowers shine in our bouquets, U-Pick sessions, and workshops, bringing a seasonal glow to every design.
Looking forward to Spring
As we put the fields to bed, we’re also planting hope for the future. This fall, we’ll tuck thousands of bulbs and corms into the soil—tulips, ranunculus, anemones, and other springtime favorites—that will burst into bloom as the farm awakens next year. Each one is a promise of beauty yet to come.
Events Start to Feel More Cozy
Our Blooms & Bites and Petals in Training workshops evolve with the season. Designs lean into autumn palettes—think cozy creams, golden yellows, and deep burgundies paired with textures that feel like harvest-time gatherings.
Photo Ops Get a Fall Makeover
Our vintage yellow truck, Buttercup, takes on her autumn look—adorned with pumpkins, gourds, and fall florals. Around the farm, seasonal props and natural backdrops create perfect spots for guests and photographers to capture the magic of the shift from summer to fall.
Come See the Shift for Yourself
September is one of the most special times to visit the flower farm. The blooms are rich, the air feels fresh, and the fields reflect both the beauty of the season and the promise of what’s next. Whether you’re here for U-Pick, a cozy picnic, or simply to soak in the charm of a changing season, we can’t wait to share it with you.
